Innovation and Creativity
The Meaning of ‘Innovation’, R&D’ and ‘Creativity

The literal meaning of the word ‘innovation’ comes from the Latin verb ‘innovare’; from in ‘into’ + novare ‘make new’. The correct understanding therefore is ‘to make changes in something established, especially by introducing new methods, ideas or products’. These new methods, ideas or products are generally (but not always) ‘new’ only insofar as they were previously unknown to or unused by the enterprise which has adopted them.

The origin of the word ‘create’ is from the Latin verb ‘creare’ ‘form out of nothing’ in the sense of ‘God created the world’. The modern use of the noun ‘creativity’ therefore means something new being brought into existence and implies the use of the imagination or original ideas to ‘create’ something which did not exist before.

Commercial Research and Development could be said therefore to constitute innovation or creativity or both. A good way to look at the difference between creativity and innovation is to see creativity as the flair, the imagination, the vision, the inventiveness, ingenuity, inspiration and originality in the R&D process; and to see innovation as the application of something new (once created) to a particular set of circumstances.
In general, commercial R&D is concerned with bringing new processes, products, ideas and methods (whether entirely new or merely new to a particular organization) to bear in the commercial enterprise as an attempt to meet needs, opportunities or threats which have been identified.

First Principle of Successful R&D
The first principle of R&D strategy is to expertly understand your
customers’ requirements and to aim to be first to market with solutions which best meet those requirements.

Why Innovate? Why is R&D Important?
The industry we are in simply abounds with change and the potential for rapid (even overnight) change: market players, technology, customer expectations, market strategies of competitors, legislation, health and environmental awareness, the pace of life, price transparency, trade barriers…..etc.
A critical factor in determining success (or even survival) in the market will be the ability to change and adapt to meet and take advantage of market changes. In this dynamic environment, the process of continually evaluating your offering and service in the light of changing requirements and needs is an imperative one. Without this ongoing re-assessment followed by positive action to address any gap which has, or is, or is expected to open up, any commercial enterprise is running the risk of finding that their offering is irrelevant and unwanted. By then, it could well be too late to try to ‘catch up’ and you could find that your business is headed for the fate of the fabled Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Uniqueness of offering is very often the key to sustained growth and success. Cutting edge R&D could provide your business with a product with uniqueness sufficient to establish you head and shoulders above your competitors; a position, from which, once established it will be hard to dislodge you from.

So, even if you have an R&D resource; how effective is it? Does your business have an R&D strategy or an R&D Management Process? These are vitally important to your business. Even if you have assessed the needs of your customers and the market and you have innovated, do your innovations launch on time, without trouble; what percentage of your new product introductions are successful? You don’t want to fall into the trap of simply launching a new product or service rather than introducing it to the business and giving it the care and attention it needs until it becomes established…

Remember, the relevance of new developments offered to the market dictates your success and this relevance is delivered by the success of your R&D program. It’s worth getting the R&D right, in fact it’s very necessary…

What is Needed for Successful R&D
In order for product development and innovation to deliver timely and appropriate new product introductions in accordance with what are sometimes widely varying customer needs; strong technical controls and a focussed R&D team operating a tightly controlled critical path process are essential.

The most successful R&D is generally found where there is: dedicated, appropriate, experienced, properly funded and positioned R&D personnel resource working as a team; the facilities required; suitable R&D processes (which keep the R&D team intimately part of the cut and thrust of the business) are utilized; the R&D team is headed by a member of the Board or Senior Management Team; and; most importantly; there is to be found within the R&D team, the creativity and flair (and the time, freedom and the lack of pressure to be creative and to exhibit flair) which is so essential to the ground breaking R&D which can put distance between one particular organization and its competitors.

This can begin to sound like the very expensive R&D team required for the development of a manned space flight project, but it is emphatically not so! All of the above can be achieved even if the R&D team consists of only one or two individuals and the resources they need.
